General Hospital is still the drama to beat in daytime TV. The ABC soap won Outstanding Daytime Drama Series at the 53rd Daytime Emmy Awards on Friday, October 30, its sixth win in a row, and longtime star Genie Francis was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The show beat Days of Our Lives on Peacock and CBS’ The Young and the Restless and Beyond the Gates for the top prize, Deadline reported.
Four Wins For General Hospital
The drama series award was one of four for General Hospital on the night. It also won for its writing team, for casting, and for Jeff Kober, who took Outstanding Guest Performance in a Daytime Drama Series for playing Cyrus Renault.
That four-win total tied General Hospital with Beyond the Gates, the CBS newcomer that also won four in its first year of eligibility. The Kelly Clarkson Show took the talk series prize in its final year.
Not everything went General Hospital’s way. Steve Burton was up for lead actor in a daytime drama for playing Jason Morgan, but the award went to Scott Clifton of The Bold and the Beautiful.
Genie Francis Takes Lifetime Achievement
Francis, who plays Laura on the show, received the Daytime Emmys’ Lifetime Achievement honor. Her husband, Jonathan Frakes, was announced ahead of the ceremony as the one presenting it to her.
A Win For Hulu, Not For The Parade
Elsewhere for Disney, Hulu’s Unleashing Hope: The Power of Service Dogs for Children with Autism won Outstanding Daytime Special. It beat a field that included ABC’s Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade, which was also up for technical direction and went home without a win. This year’s parade returns to ABC on December 25.
In the talk categories, Live with Kelly and Mark and The View were both nominated for Outstanding Daytime Talk Series, which went to Kelly Clarkson. Sherri Shepherd won Outstanding Daytime Talk Series Host.
