Bullseye Finally Gets a Voice in Toy Story 5, and Alan Cumming Is Behind It

Toy Story fans are about to hear something they have never heard before. Bullseye, Jessie’s loyal horse who first appeared in Toy Story 2 back in 1999, will finally have a speaking voice in Toy Story 5. According to LADbible, Alan Cumming has been cast in the role, marking the character’s first-ever spoken line in the franchise’s nearly three-decade history.

It is one of the most surprising casting announcements to come out of the Pixar sequel so far, and it is already generating serious buzz ahead of the film’s release.

Why Bullseye Never Spoke Before

Bullseye was originally going to have a speaking voice, with Martin Short attached to the role. However, director John Lasseter ultimately decided to make him a non-speaking character, believing it would be more appealing to audiences. That creative choice stuck through every film in the series.

For 27 years, Bullseye communicated entirely through body language, facial expressions, and animal sounds. Fans loved him for it. The decision to give him a voice in Toy Story 5, therefore, is not one Pixar made lightly.

Alan Cumming on Taking the Role

Cumming says it was “obviously a big decision” for him and the creative team to figure out what voice to give Bullseye. “So we went around the houses a bit before we settled on the one we’re using,” he explained. He also teased that the circumstances of Bullseye talking will make sense once audiences see the film.

The actor was candid about managing expectations, however. He told fans: “I would say don’t expect too much, as it is a cameo, but it is quite exciting as this character has never had a voice before.”

Cumming described the opportunity as an “incredible honour,” adding that he felt “so happy, proud and in disbelief” to join the Pixar franchise. He also confirmed that the recording process was entirely remote. He did one session in a studio with the creators joining via Zoom, and did not meet any of the other cast members in person.

What Bullseye’s Story Looks Like in Toy Story 5

In Toy Story 5, Bullseye is at eight-year-old Bonnie’s side as she navigates the next chapter of her life. However, he and Jessie become separated from the rest of the gang, forcing Bullseye to discover what it truly means to be there for his kid.

That storyline gives the character more emotional weight than he has ever carried in the franchise, which makes Cumming’s casting feel even more significant. Because Bullseye’s arc is so tied to Jessie’s journey, giving him a voice creates new storytelling possibilities that were simply not available before.

The Bigger Picture for Toy Story 5

Bullseye’s voice reveal is just one of several exciting developments surrounding the film. Returning cast members include Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, and Joan Cusack as Jessie. Joining the franchise for the first time are Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants, a potty-training toy, and Greta Lee as Lilypad, a high-tech antagonist who plays a central role in the story’s conflict.

The film follows Bonnie as she grows older and begins to drift away from her toys, forcing them to adapt to a changing world. The central theme has been described as a “Toy meets Tech” conflict, positioning traditional toys against the rise of smart technology.

Toy Story 5 hits theaters on June 19, 2026. With Bullseye finally speaking, it is shaping up to be a film full of surprises for fans who thought they knew exactly what to expect.
