Walt Disney World has rolled out a long-awaited update to the My Disney Experience app that eliminates one of the most frustrating aspects of trip planning for Annual Passholders and select ticket holders. As of May 19, 2026, guests can now make Disney Park Pass reservations directly within the app without being redirected to an external browser.
Six Years in the Making
Since the Disney Park Pass system launched in summer 2020 following the pandemic closure, guests attempting to make theme park reservations through the My Disney Experience app were automatically redirected to an external web browser. This meant re-entering login credentials, navigating a separate interface, and sometimes dealing with email verification codes. The added friction turned what should have been a simple task into a multi-step hassle that frustrated guests for nearly six years.
Who Benefits Most From This Change
While most Walt Disney World guests with standard date-based tickets no longer need park reservations, this update is particularly significant for Annual Passholders and guests with certain non-dated tickets, such as Florida resident discount tickets. These groups remain the primary users of the Park Pass system as of summer 2026. Annual Passholders can hold a set number of theme park reservations at a time on a rolling basis, with totals varying by pass tier. They may also visit parks without reservations on designated Good-To-Go days or after 2:00pm on most days, except Saturdays and Sundays at Magic Kingdom.
How the New Process Works
The streamlined experience keeps guests within the familiar My Disney Experience app environment throughout the entire reservation process. Users simply tap the plus icon at the bottom of the app, select Make a Park Reservation, choose their date from the calendar showing real-time availability, and select their desired theme park. The entire flow happens seamlessly without interruption, saving time and reducing confusion. Guests still need to ensure their valid admission is linked to their Disney account before attempting to make a reservation.
What This Signals for the Future
The timing of this investment has raised questions among Disney observers about the long-term future of the Park Pass system at Walt Disney World. Some hoped the resort would follow the path it took in January 2024 when it eliminated reservation requirements for most guests, potentially removing them entirely for Annual Passholders as well. The fact that Disney is enhancing rather than dismantling the system suggests park reservations will remain a fixture for select guest segments, despite operating with what some analysts describe as surplus capacity. Meanwhile, Disneyland Resort in California continues to require reservations for all guests and implemented the same in-app booking feature approximately one week before Walt Disney World.
