FX’s Far Cry series just landed one of the most reliably great character actors in the business. Steve Buscemi has joined the cast of the upcoming live-action adaptation of the hit Ubisoft video game franchise, which is in the works at the Disney-owned network.
Buscemi Enters The Far Cry Universe
Buscemi joins previously announced stars Rob McElhenney and Lizzy Caplan, rounding out a cast that keeps getting more interesting with each addition. According to LaughingPlace, the Boardwalk Empire and Fargo veteran is the latest big name to board the project, though details on his role remain under wraps. Given the franchise’s signature formula of charismatic, unhinged antagonists, from Vaas Montenegro to Joseph Seed, fans are already speculating that Buscemi could be playing the kind of villain the games are famous for.
FX Bets Big On Video Game Adaptations
The Far Cry games have sold tens of millions of copies across more than two decades, built on open-world chaos and memorable rogues, which gives the series a deep well of tone and iconography to draw from. Each mainline game tells a standalone story in a new setting, a structure that could serve an anthology-style television approach well.
Video game adaptations have become premium television’s most reliable new genre, and FX getting into the space with a marquee franchise signals how seriously Disney’s prestige banner is taking the trend.
