Marvel has offered fans their clearest indication yet of who will stand against Doctor Doom. A synopsis displayed alongside the studio’s “Avengers: Doomsday” presentation in Shanghai lays out the core roster of heroes returning for the December event film, and it speaks to a debate fans have argued over for months.
Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Named
The text, which appeared on the official Marvel Studios display at Bilibili World in Shanghai and circulated online in translation, describes the lineup as “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Steve Rogers, Shuri, Thor, Loki, Ant-Man, Captain America, Falcon, Shang-Chi, Bucky Barnes, Yelena Belova and Red Guardian, along with the Avengers.” As MovieWeb notes, the wording folds together members of Sam Wilson’s Avengers with heroes from the New Avengers team that formed at the end of “Thunderbolts.” Because the description came from a convention display rather than a studio press release, the exact phrasing should be treated with some caution.
The most telling detail is a small one. By listing Steve Rogers and Captain America as two separate entries, the text lines up with what many suspected: Chris Evans returns as Rogers himself, while Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson continues to carry the Captain America mantle he took up after Rogers handed him the shield at the end of “Endgame.” It is the kind of distinction fans have parsed obsessively since Evans’ return was first rumored. Notably, the phrasing also separates “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” from “the Avengers,” which may suggest Sam Wilson’s team and Yelena’s New Avengers remain distinct groups forced together by Doom’s threat.
Three Universes Collide
Even this stacked roster only scratches the surface. The film’s scale extends far beyond the core Avengers grouping, folding in the Fantastic Four, the X-Men from Fox’s original film series, and the former Thunderbolts. Disney’s official synopsis, published in its CinemaCon 2026 recap, describes beloved heroes from three distinct universes set on a deadly collision course against an existential threat unlike anything they have encountered, with a total cast running past 30 announced actors. Standing at the center is Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, marking his first MCU appearance since Tony Stark’s death, with reports describing Doom as a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
Joe and Anthony Russo return to direct from a screenplay by Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron, and the film serves as a direct lead-in to 2027’s “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Anticipation has only grown as the marketing push intensifies worldwide, capped by the studio’s Shanghai showing, where Marvel also unveiled official concept art revealing the film’s massive ensemble. “Avengers: Doomsday” hits theaters on December 18.
