Disney’s live-action “Tangled” now has a target on the calendar. According to a new report, the remake is expected to arrive in theaters in 2028, giving the project its first public release window since cameras started rolling earlier this year. Disney has not yet confirmed an official release date.
The Cast Behind Rapunzel
Teagan Croft leads the film as Rapunzel, with Milo Manheim playing Flynn Rider. Kathryn Hahn takes on Mother Gothel, and Diego Luna joins the ensemble in an original role created specifically for the film. It is a lineup that blends rising talent with two performers who bring serious range to roles that will define how audiences receive the adaptation. Michael Gracey, director of “The Greatest Showman,” is at the helm.
The original 2010 animated “Tangled” was a turning point for Walt Disney Animation Studios, reviving the studio’s princess musical tradition with modern CG animation and a sharper comedic voice. That legacy makes the remake a high-stakes proposition, since the source material is beloved and comparatively recent.
Arriving In A Tougher Climate For Remakes
The 2028 window lands at a complicated moment for Disney’s live-action strategy. The studio’s remake of “Moana” has just opened to one of the weakest debuts in the entire live-action lineup, following the well-documented struggles of “Snow White.” Both have intensified the debate over whether audiences still want photorealistic retellings of animated classics.
A 2028 release does give Disney room to learn from those results, and the extended runway may prove valuable. Production has been underway since filming began, as we reported when Disney’s live-action Tangled officially began filming in Spain.
