Joe Rohde Says Disney Will Replace The Expedition Everest Yeti, Not Fix It

The Expedition Everest Yeti is getting replaced, not repaired, according to the Imagineer who led its creation. Disney Legend Joe Rohde said on the Welcome Home Podcast, while talking about his new book Floating Mountains: The Art of Imagineering the Impossible, “To be clear, they’re going to replace the Yeti.” That is a different picture from August. At D23, Disney announced it was “bringing the Yeti back to life”, and later that weekend said the current figure would be repaired, not replaced.

Rohde, now retired, was blunt about why. “If they could fix the Yeti…they would have fixed the Yeti,” he said. He added that he does not know what the new figure will do, only that Imagineering believes it has found a solution.

Why A Moving Yeti Matters

Rohde told the podcast that the book went to print before he knew Imagineering had found a fix, and that he only learned about the plan afterward. For him the figure has one job in the story: “to establish that it is alive.” That means it has to move, and the exact movements matter less to him than the movement itself.

Riders have spent years passing a Yeti that stands still under a strobe light, the setting fans call B-Mode. When Disney confirmed the project at D23, we reported that the Expedition Everest Yeti will finally move again. Disney has said the figure will stay in the same spot in the attraction.

Why It Has Taken So Long

Rohde also explained the delay. Any solution has to be cost-effective and fit a workable window in the schedule, and if that window is missed, the project has to wait for the next one. On top of that comes the hard part of getting the old Yeti out of the mountain and a new one in, on a coaster that stays busy even with a figure that does not move.

Blog Mickey reported that Walt Disney World did not respond when asked to clarify whether the current figure is being fixed or replaced. Disney has not announced a date for the work or for the Yeti’s return.

For guests, the outcome is what counts. Whether it is a rebuilt figure or a brand new one, the goal is a Yeti that moves again, and that is the moment Expedition Everest has been missing since the effect was first shut off. We will share the timeline once Disney announces it.
