Artemis Fowl is getting a second shot at the screen. An Artemis Fowl animated series is in the works at Disney Channel and Disney+, and author Eoin Colfer broke the news himself on Sunday during the “25 Years of Artemis Fowl” panel at New York Comic Con. Colfer is on board as an executive producer.

Disney also released the first poster for the show, which carries the title Artemis Fowl: The Animated Series. It shows a young Artemis in a dark suit and tie, smirking behind a pair of glowing red, gold-framed goggles, with the Disney Channel and Disney+ logos at the bottom.

What The Show Is About

The series follows the same setup that made the books a hit. Artemis is a 13-year-old genius who discovers an underground world of armed, dangerous and surprisingly high-tech fairies. He comes up with a plan to capture one of them and steal its magic, hoping to use it to heal his dying mother and save his family.

The first book came out in 2001, 25 years ago this year, and Colfer followed it with 10 more novels, the most recent in 2021. Together they have sold more than 35 million copies and been translated into 48 languages.

It is not the first time Disney has brought Artemis to the screen. A live-action film based on the first book debuted on Disney+ in 2020 to negative reviews and was removed from the service in 2023.

What Colfer And Disney Are Saying

Colfer sounded happy with where his creation landed. “I am proud and delighted to be part of the formidable team that is putting the Artemis Fowl animation on screen,” he said. “Everyone is so talented and so positive that I feel certain the fairy world is in excellent hands.”

Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family, pointed to both new viewers and longtime readers. “Bringing this beloved franchise to life as an animated series gives us the opportunity to introduce a new generation to Artemis’ world while honoring the longtime fans who have cherished these stories for years,” she said.

Artemis joins another newly announced Disney+ cartoon. Last month the service greenlit an all-new animated Darkwing Duck series with Mark Hamill as Drake Mallard.

Who Is Making It

Ben Juwono and Colleen Evanson are executive producing the series alongside Colfer. Disney has not yet said who will voice Artemis or when the show will debut.
