Hailee Steinfeld is singing for Hexed, and fans will not have to wait for the movie to hear it. Her new song “Magic” from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ next film comes out Friday, October 23, a little over a month before Hexed opens in theaters on November 25.

The song is a cover. Steinfeld recorded her own version of “Magic” by The Cars, the 1984 hit that Ric Ocasek wrote and sang on the band’s Heartbeat City album, and it hits streaming services including Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music on release day. Laughing Place reports that a Hexed playlist on Spotify, with her track and several of the film’s needle drops, goes live the same day, and that the full Hexed soundtrack follows on November 20.
Where The Song Fits
Steinfeld voices Billie, the lead of Hexed. Billie is an impulsive teenager who finds out she has secret magical abilities. Once they break loose, she is pulled out of suburbia and into Hexe, a huge witch realm, and she has to team up with her cautious mother, Alice, voiced by Rashida Jones, to get through it. The official trailer revealed that Alice has been blocking Billie’s magic with a purple gem.
Disney has not said where “Magic” lands in the movie, only that audiences will hear it in Hexed. The film’s original music comes from Oscar winner Kris Bowers, who is scoring Hexed, and the soundtrack album pairs his score with Steinfeld’s version of “Magic.”
Disney fans already know Steinfeld as Kate Bishop from Marvel’s Hawkeye on Disney+. She also has a pop career of her own outside acting, with hits including “Love Myself,” “Starving” and “Let Me Go.”
More Hexed On The Way
The song news landed the same day Hexed tickets went on sale, Tuesday, October 20, and Disney Animation has been promoting 3D and 4DX showings alongside them.
Fawn Veerasunthorn and Jason Hand direct, with Josie Trinidad as co-director and Roy Conli and Yvett Merino producing. The voice cast also includes Tracey Ullman, Stephen Fry, Walton Goggins and Jodie Foster.
For anyone following Hexed, that leaves three dates to circle this fall: “Magic” on October 23, the soundtrack on November 20, and the movie itself on November 25.
