Disneyland metal detectors look to be part of the new esplanade security checkpoint. We spotted what appeared to be a test of them under the checkpoint’s new canopy on Thursday, October 29, and it is the clearest look yet at how guests will be screened once the checkpoint opens.
It looks like they were testing metal detectors under the canopy for the new Disneyland esplanade security checkpoint today! Unfortunately this should kill any speculation that Disneyland is getting the Walt Disney World body scanners.

That test should put some speculation to rest. There had been talk that Disneyland might bring over the touchless walk-through scanners Walt Disney World started rolling out at its park entrances in 2020, where guests keep walking instead of stopping for a traditional detector. The equipment under the Disneyland canopy looks like metal detectors, so the new checkpoint appears set to keep the style of screening Disneyland already uses.
Same Screening, New Spot
Guests have been walking through metal detectors at Disneyland since December 2015, when the resort installed them at its entrances and banned toy guns. Almost a decade later, the routine is familiar to anyone who visits: empty your pockets, step through and collect your things on the other side.
For regular visitors, that is mostly good news. Nothing about the process should feel new once the esplanade checkpoint is in use. What changes is where the screening happens, with the lines moving under the new canopy on the esplanade.
Where The Checkpoint Stands
The esplanade checkpoint has been coming together in stages. Its blue canopy went up first, and posts recently went up for the second half of the structure.
A detector test under the canopy is a sign the checkpoint is moving from construction toward setup. Disney has not announced when guests will start using it, and a test run does not set an opening date. Until then, screening continues at the existing checkpoints.
If you are heading to the parks in the coming weeks, plan on the usual metal detector routine whichever checkpoint you end up using. Keeping bags organized and pockets light still makes the line go faster for everyone behind you.
